The cardiac unit was inaugurated by his Excellency President Pohamba and President Mbeki on the 08 October 2010.
The unit is divided into 8 distinct units each with its own management and service delivery protocols and identity, striving to provide comprehensive cardiac are together in a stress free and supportive environment.
The Cardiac Surgery service has entered its fourth year of active operation with surgery offered by a two cardiothoracic surgeon. Services offered are adult cardiac surgery, Peadiatric Cardiac surgery for patient weighing more than 10kg general thoracic surgery which encompasses all the eleent of chest, lung and esophageal disease. To date we have operated successfully on 419 patients requiring open heart surgery and roughly 1500 patients requiring surgery for chest, lung and esophageal disease.

1. Cardio-Thoracic Surgery/Cardiology/ Cardiac Clinic
The clinic caters for a large number of patients presenting with all sorts of cardiac problems: All patients seen are direct seen are direct referrals from the cardiology service and the clinic is used to access patients pre operatively. On site ECHO Cardiograph service invaluable to assess function of the heart and lungs.
Clinic is held every morning of the week and attended by consultants and medical officers together with ancillary staff.
Total patients seen in cardiothoracic Clinic: 4000 per annum
2. Cardiac ICU
Cardiac ICU caters for all admissions of patients from the whole of Namibia and is reversed for patients with cardiovascular and or Thoracic Disease. Service delivery and training remains an issue and new ways of training ICU staff is investigated with help from SADC and international Heart foundations.
The Unit is staffed by (4) four medical doctors who provide a 24 hour service with sleep in ICU cover if and when there are very ill patient in the ICU. The Medical Officers were all trained by the Senior Consultants in Cardiac Unit.
3. CATHETERIZATION LAB
The entity is of outmost importance to the cardiovascular service and this is where all the diagnosis work and interventional cardiology are being done to prepare patients for surgery and to treat blocked arteries causing heart attacks. We are performing on averaged 700-800 angiographic procedures.
