Division objectives:

  1. To provide intensive care to critically ill patients without medical aid or financial ability in the private sector, i.e. patients admitted through the state hospital.
  2. Treat and support critically ill patients unable to be managed in the general wards.
  3. Provide a Centre of teaching excellence of nurses, doctors, and allied health workers, and supplement medical training of interns and medical students by means of daily bedside teaching.
  4. Provide a core of motivated doctors to undergo further specialist training.
  5. Provide emergency support for medical situations that rise elsewhere in Windhoek Central Hospital general wards.

Brief description of the service:

Intensive care unit is on 8 bedded units functional since 1982. It is a multi-disciplinary unit, providing intensive care management to patients from departments such as:

    •  Surgery
    • Internal medicine
    • Pediatrics
    • Obstetrics ( mostly Post Partum)  
     
    •  Gynecology
    •  Urology
    • ENT
    • Post anaesthetic complication
    • Oncology
    • Orthopaedics/Spinal surgery 

     

Requirements (what is it required from whoever wants to receive that service)

 

Patients who should come to the unit care are those with life threatening illness/injury who can be salvaged with the correct management and referred by a medical doctor.

 

Process (what is the process chain/procedure of receiving your service)

Patients must be referred by a doctor for admission to ICU and be followed up by the referring doctor. Once the patient has been stabilized and transferred out to the ward, the referring doctor will take over the management.

NB: For ICU Visitors ONLY, Maximum 6 people per patient, These must be the same people seeing the patient everyday until the patient is discharged.
